Darwin Tiwi Islands

get back to nature

Darwin Tiwi Islands Attractions

The Tiwi Islands Northern Territory may be even smaller than Darwin, but they sure do pack a punch! Made up of Bathurst Island and Melville Island, the islands sit about 80km north of Darwin Northern Territory, and are easily reached by a two-hour boat ride. An ideal side trip from Darwin or Alice Springs, the islands also have enough attractions to keep you busy on their own.

Sport buffs will relish fishing at the Tiwi Islands, or the Tiwi Island Grand Final. This fast-paced and exciting football game is also the only day on which the usual requisite visitor permits are waved.

A Tiwi Islands' map would be handy if you are interested in visiting the numerous art centres in the area. The Tiwi people are noted artists, with work displayed at such Aboriginal art centres as Nguiu on Bathurst Island. Palarumpi and Milikapitti on Melville Island also contain fantastic displays of Australian Aboriginal art. Unique artwork can also be seen on the Pukumani burial poles, the mortuary poles that are situated on the outskirts at Nguiu.

The Patakijiyali Museum is made up of three galleries, all displaying the rich culture and history of the Tiwi people, as well as the impact of European contact. Fort Dundas is another must-see for a taste of history: the ruins date back to 1824.

The Tiwi Islands' weather shouldn't hold you back - the area enjoys a mostly tropical climate. The islands are the gem of the Northern Territory, packed with culture and history. There are also beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, and excellent fishing, truly a visitors' paradise!
